When strangers find themselves in Athens County they will often describe a feeling...something they can't really put into words.

Some say this is the spirit of Athens County - its ghosts, legends and special aura. This "feeling" made Athens County an incredibly popular spot for spiritualists, occult members and novice ghost hunters in the late 1800's, and that reputation still lives on today.

Mt. Nebo & The Koons Spirit RoomAthens County is known for its spiritual presence - so where did it all start? Some say with Mt. Nebo and the Koons' spirit room. During the mid-1800's an Athens family became famous for holding incredibly successful seances in their humble home on a ridge top in Athens, called Mt. Nebo. The highest point in Athens County, Mt. Nebo is legendary.

The Ridges Cemeteries & State Mental HospitalThe Ridges, formerly the Athens Lunatic Asylum, is now the home of Ohio University's Kennedy Museum of Art and other university offices.

The West State AngelThe West State Cemetery is home to the Angel of the Unknown Soldiers. The gravestone commemorates the unknown soldiers buried there. Legend has it she weeps and flutters her wings.

Wilson Hall & Room 428In Ohio University’s Wilson Hall on the West Green the door to room 428 is closed and sealed. Why would a university seal off a room that could be used for one of its thousands of students? Because school officials have deemed the room uninhabitable.
