Nineteen Miles of Beauty!

The Hockhocking Adena Bikeway is such an incredible experience that people drive from all over Ohio and the region just to ride it. Connecting Athens and Nelsonville, the bikeway twists and turns alongside the winding Hocking River. The bikeway's low grade makes for an easy, relaxing ride, and the scenery is unforgettable. Start in front of the Athens Community Center on East State Street, ride by Ohio University's campus, disappear into the serene woods of the Wayne National Forest, and end your trip at the Rocky Boot outlet in Nelsonville.

The 19-mile bikeway was named in honor of the area's first inhabitants, the Adena Indians, whose name for the Hocking River, "Hockhocking," meant “bottleneck” or “twisted.”

The path itself is on the old Columbus and Hocking Valley Railroad bed. Even before the railroad, it was a towpath alongside the Hocking Canal. Today, remnants of the canal basin are visible from the bikeway, particularly from Armitage Road north to Chauncey (between miles 5 and 10).

On the way stop at these attractions:

Eclipse Company Town, the Plains
Robbins Crossing, Hocking College
Historic Square Arts District, Nelsonville
Hocking Valley Scenic Railway, Nelsonville

Can't bring your bikes? No problem. Rent a bike at the Athens Bicycle Shop at 14 W. Stimson, just a quick ride from the bikeway.
